Thirty Years of Openness, Dialogue and Shared Responsibility: Villa Decius Celebrates Its Jubilee

On 6 September 2026, Villa Decius welcomed guests to a Jubilee Gala marking thirty years since the historic residence reopened its doors to the people of Kraków. The anniversary offered an opportunity not only to reflect on the institution’s achievements, but also to recognise the enduring value of a place in which culture fosters dialogue, strengthens communities and creates space for cooperation across borders.

On 6 September 2026, we mark the thirtieth anniversary of the reopening of Villa Decius to the people of Kraków. This jubilee celebrates a place where Renaissance heritage is united with a profound sense of responsibility for the present, and where deep local roots sustain an active presence in European cultural life.

German translation summer school has started!

Today, the Summer School for emerging translators of German-language literature from across Poland began at Villa Decius. This is the second edition of the school, which we are delighted to co-create with the Goethe-Institut, under the patronage of the Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation, as part of the Litrix.de project promoting the translation of German-language literature into Polish. The Summer School is an opportunity to develop translation skills and meet acclaimed translators, editors and literary scholars. As a place of encounter, Villa Decius creates a space for dialogue – bringing together emerging and experienced translators from different generations and backgrounds, with translation becoming a tool for mutual understanding at the intersection of languages and cultures.
Jakob Andratsch Begins Literary Residency in Krakow

Austrian writer and independent artist Jakob Andratsch has arrived in Krakow and begun his residency as part of the Tyrol Residency, a joint programme of Krakow UNESCO City of Literature and Villa Decius. The first part of his residency will take place under the auspices of the Krakow Festival Office, the operator of the UNESCO CoL programme, after which he will move to Villa Decius. The initiative provides the conditions for intensive creative work, research and archival enquiries, as well as opportunities to connect with local and international literary communities.

On the final day of the Miłosz Festival, we met with Olesia Mamchych – a Ukrainian writer, poet, and essayist, currently a fellow of the Homines Urbani residency programme at Villa Decius.
The Karl Dedecius Award Gala at Villa Decius – an evening of translation, dialogue and literature beyond borders

On 1 July, the Kraków gala of the Karl Dedecius Award was held at Villa Decius – one of the most important distinctions for translators of German-language literature into Polish and of Polish literature into German. This year’s laureates were Eliza Borg, honoured for her translation of Jenny Erpenbeck’s novel Kairos into Polish, and Olaf Kühl, awarded for his translation of Szczepan Twardoch’s novel Null into German, published as Die Nulllinie.
